Los Angeles cold storage fire burns for a week as structural risks hamper containment
Firefighters in Southern California continue to battle a massive blaze that erupted nearly a week ago at a commercial cold storage facility in Los Angeles, sending thick plumes of smoke across the region and triggering air quality alerts.
The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported that the fire, located in a storage facility within the Boyle Heights neighborhood, remains uncontained. LAFD Chief Jaime Moore explained that the building's specific structural design and the configuration of its cold storage racking systems have forced crews to fight the fire exclusively from the exterior.
According to Chief Moore, the building's roof has collapsed onto the high-density storage racks, creating an unstable environment that poses severe safety risks for any interior firefighting operations. Officials disclosed that the facility holds approximately 38.5 million kilograms (about 85 million pounds) of frozen food.
Environmental Impact and Cause
The operating company stated that the fire originated during testing procedures conducted on the facility's rooftop solar energy system.
The ongoing blaze has significantly compromised air quality across the eastern sectors of Los Angeles, including Boyle Heights and parts of the San Gabriel Valley. Environmental monitors have recorded air quality indexes reaching "unhealthy" levels in several adjacent areas, prompting officials to advise local residents to remain indoors with windows closed.
In response to the prolonged incident and to deploy additional resources for the containment effort, California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for the affected region on June 21. Minitrial containment operations and air monitoring are expected to continue as teams work to safely dismantle the structural hazards. (ILKHA)
