Unknown perpetrators vandalized the outer entrance wall of the historic Çınar Mosque in Xanthi, Western Thrace, by writing insulting messages targeting Islamic beliefs, prompting strong condemnation from representatives of the Turkish Muslim minority in the region.

The attack targeted one of the most important places of worship for Muslims in Western Thrace.

According to local authorities, offensive graffiti directed at Islam and its sacred values was discovered on the mosque's entrance wall. The incident was reported after the vandalism was noticed on Saturday.

Minority council condemns attack

In a statement, the Consultative Committee of the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace said the messages were incompatible with the principles of humanity, morality and the respect that should be shown to places of worship.

The committee stressed that all attacks and acts of disrespect against places of worship, sacred sites and religious beliefs are unacceptable, strongly condemning the vandalism at Çınar Mosque.

It also called on the Greek authorities to identify those responsible as soon as possible, bring them before the courts and ensure they are held accountable for the attack.

Historic mosque serves Muslim community

Çınar Mosque is one of the principal religious and community centers of the Muslim Turkish minority in Xanthi and has long served as an important place of worship in Western Thrace.

The latest incident comes amid continuing concerns over the protection of religious sites belonging to the Turkish Muslim minority in the region, with community representatives urging authorities to take effective measures against hate-motivated attacks targeting places of worship and religious values.(ILKHA)
