Oman, Iran call for lasting maritime security in Strait of Hormuz
Oman and Iran have called for permanent maritime security arrangements aimed at ending the regional war, safeguarding shipping lanes and ensuring the uninterrupted flow of international trade and energy through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the Oman News Agency (ONA), Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi reviewed the latest diplomatic contacts during a telephone conversation, including efforts to restore unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Ministers stress need for lasting maritime security
The two ministers underscored the importance of establishing sustainable arrangements to guarantee maritime security, bring an end to the state of war and prevent renewed conflict in the region.
They said such arrangements should be based on practical measures to protect vital sea lanes and on joint technical mechanisms that would ensure the uninterrupted movement of international trade and global energy supplies through the strategic waterway.
The ministers also stressed that durable maritime security arrangements would help reduce tensions and strengthen regional stability.
Call for dialogue and respect for sovereignty
Al Busaidi and Araghchi said any future agreement should respect the national sovereignty and legitimate interests of all parties while creating conditions for renewed dialogue and negotiations to address the underlying causes of regional tensions.
They added that lasting peace would require diplomatic engagement alongside practical security mechanisms capable of preventing renewed conflict and protecting international shipping routes.
The Strait of Hormuz, situated between Oman and Iran, is one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports.
Maritime traffic through the strategic waterway has been disrupted by the ongoing regional conflict, prompting renewed diplomatic efforts to restore safe navigation and ensure the uninterrupted flow of international trade and energy supplies.(ILKHA)
