Search and rescue operations entered their third day on Tuesday after a passenger ferry capsized off the coast of Kyrenia (Girne) in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), leaving eight people dead and 20 others still missing.
Turkish and TRNC authorities continued a large-scale air and sea search, deploying naval vessels, Coast Guard units, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and a CASA military surveillance aircraft. Search teams are also conducting operations along the coastline and underwater to locate the missing passengers.
Deep-sea search equipment to examine wreck
TRNC President Tufan Erhurman said the ferry had been located at a depth of approximately 514 meters, where conventional diving operations are not possible.
He announced that a specialized vessel from Türkiye equipped with robotic technology capable of operating at depths of around 1,000 meters had joined the operation to examine the wreck and surrounding seabed.
Rescue crews have recovered some debris from the ferry as well as personal belongings of passengers during search operations. The crisis coordination center established at Kyrenia Port continues to manage the ongoing efforts.
Eight victims identified
Authorities said eight people who lost their lives in the disaster were identified as Turkish nationals.
Officials confirmed that 20 people remain missing after comparing hospital records with the passenger manifest.
Search operations are continuing with the participation of Turkish and TRNC military and civilian teams, while authorities are working to locate the remaining passengers.
Investigation into the disaster continues
TRNC President Tufan Erhurman said that any possible mistake, negligence or wrongdoing related to the accident would be investigated and that the findings would be shared with the public.
The ferry disaster has triggered a major rescue operation involving air, sea and underwater teams from Türkiye and the TRNC as authorities continue efforts to determine the full extent of the tragedy.(ILKHA)
