Storm Claudia kills three in Portugal, sparks major flooding in Britain
Storm Claudia has caused severe destruction across parts of Portugal and the United Kingdom, killing at least three people and injuring dozens, authorities reported on Saturday.
Portugal has been hit by days of violent weather since the arrival of Storm Claudia. In Fernao Ferro, near Lisbon, rescue workers discovered the bodies of an elderly couple who died after their home flooded overnight on Thursday. According to officials, the couple appeared to have been sleeping when water levels suddenly rose, leaving them unable to escape.
On Saturday, a tornado linked to the storm struck the coastal city of Albufeira in the Algarve region. Emergency services said an 85-year-old British woman was killed after the tornado damaged and overturned caravans at a camping site. Twenty-eight people were injured at a nearby hotel, with two in serious condition.
Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed condolences to the victims’ families and wished a swift recovery to the injured. The Portuguese weather service, IPMA, placed the entire Algarve and the districts of Beja and Setúbal under an amber alert, its second-highest warning level.
Storm Claudia also reached parts of Britain and Ireland on Saturday, bringing heavy rain and dangerous flooding to Wales and England.
In the town of Monmouth in southeastern Wales, significant flooding was reported after a nearby river burst its banks overnight. Aerial images showed water inundating the town centre and surrounding residential areas. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it was conducting rescue operations, evacuations, and welfare checks across the region.
The Welsh government said the storm had affected homes, businesses, transport, and energy infrastructure. Natural Resources Wales issued 11 flood warnings, including four severe warnings, along with 17 flood alerts.
In England, the Environment Agency reported 49 active flood warnings and 134 flood alerts due to rising water levels and continued rainfall.
Authorities in both countries have urged residents to remain cautious as the storm continues to move across the region. Emergency services are monitoring conditions and responding to new incidents as they occur. (ILKHA)
