Trump meets Russian envoy ahead of Ukraine-Russia-US peace talks in Abu Dhabi
US President Donald Trump met with Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev on November 5, ahead of planned trilateral peace negotiations between Ukraine, Russia and the United States, expressing confidence that a major agreement could eventually bring an end to the war and have wider implications for Europe.
"There’s going to be an agreement. It’s going to be a big agreement, and it’s going to involve more than Ukraine," Trump said during a public appearance. "I could even say it might involve all of Europe. It's going to be a big, beautiful agreement and everyone is going to be thrilled."
Trump confirmed his meeting with Dmitriev at a separate press conference after being asked about the encounter, but declined to disclose details of their discussion.
The meeting came as diplomatic efforts to end Russia's war in Ukraine gained momentum ahead of a new round of trilateral negotiations scheduled for November 10–11 in Abu Dhabi, according to US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Russian and Ukrainian officials, including Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets, were also in Washington for an event hosted by US First Lady Melania Trump at the White House.
The event marked the success of the Oleshky humanitarian operation, through which hundreds of residents were evacuated from the frontline town in Ukraine.
Trump said he did not meet any Ukrainian officials following the first lady's event.
Meanwhile, the European Commission hosted a separate meeting in Brussels on November 4, bringing together representatives from the United States, Ukraine, NATO and several European countries to coordinate diplomatic efforts ahead of the upcoming Abu Dhabi negotiations.
The discussions focused on efforts to end the war and strengthen coordination among Kyiv's international partners.
Peace negotiations have remained largely stalled for several months after previous US-led diplomatic initiatives failed to produce a major breakthrough. Moscow has continued to maintain demands that Kyiv and its Western allies consider unacceptable, complicating efforts to reach a settlement.
The upcoming talks in Abu Dhabi are expected to provide another opportunity for Washington, Moscow and Kyiv to explore a possible diplomatic path towards ending the conflict, although significant disagreements remain over territorial issues and security guarantees.
Trump's latest remarks suggest that Washington is seeking a broader agreement that could extend beyond the immediate conflict in Ukraine and reshape security arrangements across Europe. (ILKHA)
