A shooting incident near the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner in Washington, D.C., triggered panic late Saturday night, prompting a swift security response and the detention of a suspect described by Donald Trump as a “would-be assassin.”

According to the United States Secret Service, the gunfire occurred near the main security screening area outside the ballroom of the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile WHCA dinner was being held.

Authorities confirmed that the president, First Lady Melania Trump, and other protected officials were unharmed. One suspect was quickly taken into custody after reportedly breaching part of the security perimeter and opening fire.

In remarks to reporters, Trump said the attacker had been armed with multiple weapons and managed to rush past a checkpoint before being subdued by security personnel.
