Two killed as small plane crashes onto motorway in eastern Germany
Two people were killed on Friday after a small aircraft crashed onto Germany's A2 motorway in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, prompting the closure of all lanes heading towards Hannover, police said.
The aircraft came down at around 2:48 p.m. local time between the town of Burg and the Krähenberge rest area, northeast of Magdeburg. It burst into flames on impact, and emergency crews recovered the two occupants dead from the wreckage.
Police said initial findings indicated that no vehicles travelling on the motorway were involved in the crash. The cause of the accident remains unknown.
Photographs from the scene showed firefighters extinguishing the remains of a red-and-white aircraft, with its tail lying on the roadway and burned wreckage scattered along an embankment.
Firefighters from several nearby towns, police officers and emergency medical teams were deployed to the scene. Psychosocial emergency support services were also involved in assisting those affected by the incident.
Later media reports identified the aircraft as belonging to the Aero Club Kropp, based in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. According to reports citing flight-tracking information, the aircraft had taken off from the Schleswig area earlier on Friday.
The club confirmed that one of its members was among those killed but did not disclose the victims' identities. The circumstances leading to the crash have not yet been established.
Investigators are expected to examine the wreckage and reconstruct the aircraft's final moments to determine what caused it to come down on the motorway.
The crash forced authorities to close the Hannover-bound carriageway of the A2 while emergency crews dealt with the fire and secured the wreckage. The duration of the closure was initially unclear.
The A2 is one of Germany's main east-west transport corridors, connecting the greater Berlin area with North Rhine-Westphalia, the country's most populous state. The motorway carries significant passenger and freight traffic across the country. (ILKHA)
