The United States and Poland have made significant progress toward establishing a permanent U.S. Army base on Polish territory, President Donald Trump announced, describing the project as a historic step in strengthening the strategic alliance between the two countries.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump credited Polish President Karol Nawrocki for what he described as "bold leadership" in advancing negotiations over the planned military installation.

"If this happens, the location will be announced very soon. This will be a historic step for our great U.S.-Polish alliance," Trump wrote.

Poland welcomes Trump's announcement

Nawrocki thanked Trump for his remarks, saying Warsaw remained committed to strengthening defense cooperation with Washington.

"I can assure you that the Polish government will do its utmost to provide the best possible location for the U.S. Army base," the Polish president said in a statement.

Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the Presidential Chancellery, described Trump's announcement as "great news for Poland," noting that it came on the anniversary of the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland and at a time when Russia continues to pose security challenges in Europe.

Warsaw has long sought a permanent U.S. presence

Poland has repeatedly called for a permanent U.S. military presence since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, arguing that a permanent American base would strengthen NATO's eastern flank and enhance regional deterrence.

In June, Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said the U.S. Department of Defense was open to Poland's proposal but stressed that no final decision had yet been made.

During a meeting in Brussels the same month, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a broader Pentagon review of American troop deployments across Europe, with Poland's proposal expected to be considered as part of that assessment.

Permanent deployment under consideration

The United States currently stations thousands of troops in Poland on a rotational basis under NATO arrangements.

Polish officials have been working for months on possible locations, infrastructure requirements and logistical planning for a permanent installation, while bilateral working groups continue discussions on expanding the long-term U.S. military presence.

If approved, the base would represent one of the most significant developments in U.S.-Poland defense cooperation in decades and further reinforce NATO's military posture along its eastern border amid continuing tensions with Russia.(ILKHA)
