Muslims worldwide set to mark Mawlid al-Nabi on Monday
Muslims around the world are preparing to mark Mawlid al-Nabi, the anniversary of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), with prayers, Quran recitations, religious gatherings and programs celebrating his life and teachings.
The occasion is traditionally observed on 12 Rabi al-Awwal, although the exact Gregorian date varies from year to year and may differ between countries depending on lunar-calendar calculations and the sighting of the moon.
On Mawlid al-Nabi, Muslims of all ages gather at mosques and other religious venues to offer prayers, recite the Holy Quran and remember the life and character of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Religious gatherings commonly feature sermons focusing on the Prophet’s teachings, compassion, justice, mercy and commitment to helping the vulnerable. In many communities, believers also recite devotional poems, hymns and naats praising the Prophet.
Families and communities organize special meals, charitable activities and gatherings, while religious institutions arrange lectures and educational programs focusing on the Prophet’s life and legacy.
Mawlid celebrations vary considerably according to local traditions. In some countries, large public gatherings and religious processions are held, while elsewhere the occasion is observed more privately through prayer and family gatherings.
Mosques, Islamic organizations and community groups organize Quran recitations, religious lectures, exhibitions, cultural programs and charitable initiatives.
The occasion also provides an opportunity for Muslims to reflect on the Prophet’s message and his example in areas including compassion, social justice, patience, forgiveness and solidarity with those in need.
For Muslims who commemorate Mawlid, the occasion represents an opportunity to renew their connection with Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and reflect on his role in conveying the message of Islam.
The Prophet was born in Makkah and died in Madinah at the age of 63. Traditional Islamic accounts commonly associate both his birth and death with 12 Rabi al-Awwal, although historical sources differ over the precise date of his birth.
Mawlid is recognized as a public holiday in a number of Muslim-majority countries, including Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Bangladesh, while observances and official holiday arrangements vary elsewhere.
In some countries, including parts of India, Muslim communities also organize extensive religious and cultural programs to mark the occasion.
Beyond the festivities, Mawlid al-Nabi remains for millions of Muslims a time for worship, remembrance and reflection on the Prophet’s teachings.
Communities frequently use the occasion to emphasize charity and assistance to people facing poverty and hardship, seeking to translate the values associated with the Prophet’s life into acts of compassion and solidarity.
As Muslims gather in mosques and homes around the world, Mawlid al-Nabi continues to serve as an important occasion for remembering Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), strengthening religious bonds and reflecting on the values of mercy, justice and brotherhood. (ILKHA)
