Ukraine's military reportedly launched a large-scale drone attack on the Russian city of Belgorod overnight on Sunday. 9, according to Russian Telegram channels.
Photos and videos shared on social media appeared to show fires and damage at residential buildings across the city. Several structures were reportedly damaged, including the Avtograd shopping center, which the independent Russian Telegram channel ASTRA described as partially destroyed.
The exact targets of the reported attack remained unclear.
ASTRA, citing open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysis, reported that an FSB regional headquarters was located between three of the damaged buildings. Another building reportedly struck in the attack was located around 600 meters from the Belgorod Thermal Power Plant.
Acting Belgorod Oblast Governor Alexander Shuvaev said the attack injured 13 people. Details about the severity of the injuries were not immediately available.
The reports could not be independently verified, and the claims made by Russian officials and Telegram channels remain unconfirmed. Ukraine's military has not publicly commented on the reported attack.
Belgorod has been repeatedly targeted during the Russia-Ukraine war due to its proximity to the front line and the Ukrainian border.
The city lies approximately 34 kilometers (21 miles) from Ukraine's northeastern border and about 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Kharkiv, making it a strategically significant location in the conflict.
The reported drone attack comes amid a broader escalation in long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine. In recent weeks, Russian forces have intensified ballistic missile attacks against Ukrainian cities, while Ukraine continues to face significant shortages of air-defense systems.
The reported attack on Belgorod came a day after Russia launched an overnight attack against Kyiv and the surrounding region on Aug. 8.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the Russian attack killed four people, including a three-year-old child, and injured eight others.
