At least 10 people were injured, two of them critically, after a car bomb exploded outside a police station in Mexico's central state of Zacatecas, authorities said.
According to the Zacatecas State Attorney General's Office, a powerful explosion occurred outside the Ojocaliente Municipal Police headquarters.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the attack was carried out using a vehicle loaded with explosives. State officials said the vehicle had previously been reported stolen in the neighboring state of Jalisco and was detonated near the police station.
Authorities said the blast injured 10 people, including police personnel, while two victims remain in critical condition. The explosion also damaged nearby homes, commercial buildings and several vehicles parked around the police headquarters.
Zacatecas State Attorney General Cristian Paul Camacho said members of an organized crime group launched the attack using both firearms and explosives.
Camacho said investigators are examining whether the bombing was carried out in retaliation for the arrest of a suspected criminal a day earlier near the Zacatecas-Aguascalientes state border. However, authorities stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and no final conclusions have been reached.
Security forces launched a large-scale operation following the explosion to locate those responsible. Zacatecas Governor David Monreal said the situation had been brought under control and that state authorities were working in coordination with federal security agencies as the investigation continued.
Officials said the bombing reflects an increasingly sophisticated use of explosives by organized crime groups in Mexico. Governor Monreal noted that criminal organizations have increasingly resorted to car bombs, explosive-laden drones and improvised explosive devices in recent years.
Security officials reported that Zacatecas has recorded a steady rise in explosive attacks, underscoring growing concerns over the evolving tactics employed by criminal groups in one of Mexico's key drug trafficking corridors.
No fatalities have been reported, while investigations into the attack remain ongoing. (ILKHA)
