Chile will temporarily close its embassy in Tehran by the end of August, citing security conditions in the Middle East, operational restructuring and the need for more efficient use of diplomatic resources. The government stressed that the decision does not mean diplomatic relations with Iran have been suspended or ended.

Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the closure is part of an internal restructuring process aimed at redirecting available resources toward the country’s foreign policy priorities and improving the efficiency of its diplomatic missions abroad.

The ministry said the decision was also linked to precautionary measures taken due to the current security environment in the Middle East. Authorities noted that ensuring the protection and safety of diplomatic personnel in Tehran was among the main factors behind the move.

Chile emphasized that relations with Iran will continue despite the temporary closure of the embassy. The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1942, and Santiago said the decision does not represent a rupture in bilateral relations.

The government added that consular services for Chilean citizens in Iran will continue to be provided through Chile’s consulate in Ankara, Türkiye, during the period when the Tehran embassy remains closed.(ILKHA)
