Gen Z-led protests in Mexico turn violent after outrage over mayor’s assassination
A mass protest in Mexico City led by Generation Z demonstrators erupted into violence on Saturday, leaving more than 120 people injured amid growing public anger over the assassination of a popular anti-cartel mayor.
Thousands marched through the capital to denounce the security policies of President Claudia Sheinbaum, whose administration has faced increasing scrutiny following a series of high-profile killings. Although Sheinbaum continues to enjoy approval ratings above 70%, discontent has intensified over the murder of Uruapan mayor Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, who was shot dead on 1 November after openly confronting drug trafficking networks in Michoacán state.
Mexico City security chief Pablo Vázquez said the protest had remained peaceful for several hours before a group of hooded individuals began attacking police and government property. He confirmed that 100 police officers were injured, with 40 requiring hospital care, while 20 protesters were also hurt during clashes.
Demonstrators rallied outside the National Palace — the presidential residence and office — knocking down metal barricades and confronting police guarding the compound. Officers deployed tear gas and used fire extinguishers in an attempt to push back crowds who were striking the palace barriers.
Protesters chanted, “This is how you should have protected Carlos Manzo!” as they clashed with security forces. Many participants carried banners bearing the mayor’s image, while others wore hats honoring his anti-cartel campaign.
The protest, initially organized online by Gen Z activists, eventually drew wider participation from older supporters of opposition parties. In the days prior to the march, President Sheinbaum accused right-wing groups of attempting to infiltrate the youth-led movement and using social media bots to boost turnout.
“It is a movement promoted from abroad against the government,” Sheinbaum said, alleging foreign influence in the organization of the demonstrations.
As tensions continue to rise over the government’s handling of security and cartel violence, Saturday’s unrest underscores the mounting pressure on Sheinbaum’s administration only a year into her presidency. (ILKHA)
