Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met Khalilur Rahman, president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, in New York, Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
The ministry announced the meeting in a post on X but did not disclose details of the discussions. Reuters footage showed Fidan and Rahman meeting in New York.
Rahman, who is also Bangladesh’s foreign minister, was elected president of the 81st General Assembly session on June 2. The session formally opened on Sept. 8 under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
Fidan accompanied Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to New York for the high-level week of the General Assembly and held a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings with foreign ministers and other officials, according to Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry.
The Turkish foreign minister said on Saturday that he had taken part in more than 40 bilateral and multilateral meetings during the week, with the Palestinian issue among Ankara’s main diplomatic priorities. He said Türkiye had emphasized dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional and international crises.
Fidan also met with counterparts from Egypt, Jordan, the European Union, the United Kingdom and other countries during his New York visit, while participating in meetings focused on Gaza, Libya, regional security and multilateral cooperation.
Rahman assumed the presidency of the General Assembly after serving as Bangladesh’s foreign minister. Before becoming foreign minister in February 2026, he served as Bangladesh’s national security adviser and high representative for Rohingya affairs, according to the United Nations.
The General Assembly’s high-level debate, which began on Sept. 22, has brought world leaders and senior diplomats together at UN headquarters in New York to discuss conflicts, international security, development and other global issues.
No further information was immediately available on the subjects discussed by Fidan and Rahman or whether the two officials agreed on any follow-up measures. (ILKHA)
