India launches large-scale evacuations as Cyclone Murasu approaches eastern coast
Indian authorities have begun evacuating thousands of residents from vulnerable coastal areas as Cyclone Murasu approaches the country's eastern shoreline, with around 30,000 people expected to be moved to safer locations before the storm makes landfall.
The large-scale evacuation operation comes less than a week after Cyclone Arnab battered India's east coast, killing at least six people and leaving widespread damage to homes, infrastructure and farmland.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Murasu formed over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to make landfall along the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Tuesday. Forecasters warned that the storm could bring sustained winds of 100-110 km/h, with gusts reaching 120 km/h, accompanied by heavy rainfall and rough seas.
Thousands already moved to safer locations
Prakhar Jain, Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority, said evacuation efforts were progressing steadily.
"Around 2,000 people have already been evacuated, and the process is continuing. We are planning to evacuate approximately 30,000 people from vulnerable areas," Jain told Reuters.
Emergency shelters have been opened across coastal districts, while disaster response teams, medical personnel and rescue units have been placed on high alert ahead of the cyclone's arrival. Authorities have also advised fishermen to remain ashore until weather conditions improve.
Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu on alert
Meteorologists said Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are expected to experience the strongest impact from the cyclone, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast in several districts. Authorities have urged residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to comply with evacuation orders and follow official safety instructions.
The Bay of Bengal is one of the world's most active regions for tropical cyclones, and severe storms regularly strike India's eastern coastline during the cyclone season.
Officials said emergency operations would remain in place until Cyclone Murasu passes and authorities can begin assessing any damage caused by the storm.(ILKHA)
