Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Monday that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a US MQ-1 unmanned aerial vehicle over the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting Tehran’s continued ability to challenge US aerial activity over the strategic waterway.

The IRGC said the drone was detected and destroyed by a newly developed advanced aerospace air-defense system operated by its Aerospace Force as part of Iran’s integrated air-defense network. Iranian media, including Mehr News Agency, reported the claim. Anadolu Agency also reported the IRGC’s announcement.

The IRGC described the MQ-1 as belonging to the “terrorist US army” and said the interception represented another successful operation by Iranian air-defense forces over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian forces have reported a series of interceptions involving US unmanned aircraft around the waterway in recent weeks. On September 15, the IRGC said it had brought down two additional MQ-1 drones, bringing the number of MQ-1 aircraft it said it had intercepted in recent days to four at that point.

The latest announcement places particular emphasis on Iran’s domestically developed air-defense capabilities. The IRGC said the MQ-1 was tracked and destroyed by a newly deployed system integrated into the country's broader air-defense network.

Iranian officials and military outlets have increasingly highlighted the development of indigenous air-defense systems as part of Tehran’s strategy to strengthen its ability to monitor and respond to foreign military activity in its surrounding airspace and waters.

The reported interception also follows earlier claims by Iranian forces that they had destroyed other reconnaissance drones over the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media has described the repeated interceptions as evidence of the readiness of the country’s air-defense network.

In its latest statement, the IRGC said Washington had returned the older MQ-1 platform to operational use after suffering what it described as significant losses involving the more advanced MQ-9 Reaper fleet.

The MQ-1 Predator was an earlier generation of US remotely piloted aircraft that was largely replaced by the MQ-9. The IRGC said the MQ-1 involved in the latest incident had accumulated extensive operational experience during the US war in Afghanistan before being retired.

Iranian officials portrayed the reported return of the MQ-1 as a consequence of losses suffered by more advanced US unmanned aircraft during the conflict. The claim about the extent of those losses is an Iranian military assessment and has not been independently established by the available reporting.

The reported interception comes as tensions between Iran and the United States remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important energy corridors.

The waterway has become a major arena of the broader confrontation, with Iranian and US forces carrying out military operations in and around the Gulf. Recent fighting has also sharply reduced commercial shipping through the strait, with Reuters reporting that only 17 commodity vessels crossed during the latest weekend, compared with a pre-war average of about 125 vessels per day.

The latest Iranian announcement therefore carries significance beyond the loss of a single drone, as Tehran continues to demonstrate and emphasize its capacity to monitor the strategic waterway and challenge US military operations in the region.
