Iranian forces shoots down US MQ-9 Reaper drone over Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced Monday that its air defense forces successfully intercepted and shot down a US MQ-9 Reaper drone over the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
According to the IRGC, the US unmanned aircraft was targeted by missile fire from Iran’s advanced air defense units and subsequently crashed into the waters of the Persian Gulf.
The IRGC’s public relations office said the operation demonstrated the readiness and vigilance of Iran’s air defense forces in protecting the country’s sovereignty and monitoring activity around its strategic waterways.
“A few minutes ago, with missile fire from the ever-watchful fighters of the IRGC’s modern air defense, a US long-range MQ-9 drone was struck over the Strait of Hormuz and fell into the blue waters of the Persian Gulf,” the statement said.
The incident highlights Iran’s ability to detect and engage sophisticated US surveillance platforms operating near its territory and strategically important maritime routes.
The MQ-9 Reaper is a long-endurance US military drone widely used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Its reported downing represents a significant demonstration of Iran’s air defense capabilities, particularly in an area as strategically sensitive as the Strait of Hormuz.
For Tehran, maintaining security around the Strait of Hormuz is a matter of national sovereignty and strategic security. The waterway is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
The IRGC has repeatedly emphasized that it will respond to what it considers violations of Iranian airspace or threats to the country’s security. Monday’s announcement reinforces Tehran’s message that foreign military activity in and around Iran’s strategic sphere will be closely monitored and, if necessary, confronted.
The US has yet to provide an immediate detailed response to the IRGC’s announcement or clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported loss of the MQ-9 drone. (ILKHA)
