Israeli Knesset passes first reading of death penalty bill for Palestinian prisoners
The Israeli Knesset has passed the first reading of a highly controversial bill that would impose the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, sparking widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and activists.
The legislation, championed by far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir, targets Palestinians accused of acts deemed “terrorism” under Israeli law.
Critics warn that the bill would further entrench systematic oppression against Palestinians, many of whom are already imprisoned under harsh and inhumane conditions, including overcrowding, torture allegations, and lack of adequate medical care.
Following the first reading, Ben‑Gvir celebrated on social media, declaring: “Otzma Yehudit is making history. We promised and delivered. The death penalty for terrorists has been approved in the first vote.”
The bill still must pass two additional readings in the Knesset before it can become law.
Human rights groups and local Palestinian activists highlight that Israel currently detains over 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children. They warn that the proposed legislation could intensify collective punishment, further violate prisoners’ rights, and escalate tensions across the occupied territories.
Observers say the measure is likely to draw strong international criticism, further isolate Israel diplomatically, and deepen the cycle of violence in the region. Palestinian advocates describe the bill as part of a broader campaign by the Israeli government to criminalize and punish Palestinians collectively, raising serious concerns about potential human rights violations and the erosion of legal safeguards for those in detention.
The first reading of the bill represents a stark escalation in Israel’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners and signals a hardening of policy under far-right political leadership. (ILKHA)
