Landslide kills over 1,000 in Sudan’s war-torn Darfur

A massive landslide triggered by heavy rains has devastated Sudan’s western Darfur region, killing at least 1,000 people and obliterating the village of Tarasin, according to the Sudan Liberation Army.
The landslide struck the Marra Mountains, where thousands of displaced families had sought refuge after fleeing brutal fighting in Sudan’s ongoing civil war. Survivors describe the situation as catastrophic, with entire communities buried beneath mud and debris.
“The people are in a dire situation and desperately need international assistance,” the armed group said in an appeal to the United Nations and humanitarian organizations.
Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, called the tragedy “a great catastrophe” and urged the global community to intervene quickly. “The people cannot overcome this disaster alone,” he stressed, noting that local authorities lack the resources to respond effectively.
The landslide comes as Sudan grapples with one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Since April 2023, the country has been consumed by a civil war that has killed as many as 150,000 people and displaced more than 12 million, leaving millions on the brink of famine.
International aid agencies warn that delivering relief will be a major challenge due to the ongoing conflict, damaged infrastructure, and restricted access to Darfur’s remote mountain areas.
Local officials fear the death toll could rise further as rescue teams struggle to reach affected zones. Emergency shelters, food, and medical supplies are urgently needed to support survivors who have lost everything.
As families mourn their loved ones, the disaster underscores the immense suffering of Sudan’s population—caught between relentless conflict, mass displacement, and now a natural catastrophe of devastating scale. (ILKHA)
