Oman has completed support and rescue operations for the Saudi-flagged oil tanker SIDR after the vessel was struck by a projectile off Musandam Governorate, leaving two crew members dead.

Oman’s authorities said a vessel operated by the Royal Navy of Oman responded to the incident and provided logistical and emergency assistance to the tanker’s 25-member crew.

As part of the rescue operation, 16 crew members were evacuated from the tanker and transported for medical treatment after the incident, according to Oman’s Maritime Security Centre.

The SIDR was reportedly hit by a projectile approximately two nautical miles northwest of Musandam, an area strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil shipments.

The impact resulted in casualties among the crew, with two crew members confirmed dead.

The circumstances surrounding the projectile strike, including its origin and the party responsible, were not immediately disclosed by Omani authorities.

Following the incident, Omani maritime authorities and the Royal Navy moved to assist the affected vessel and its crew.

The rescue operation focused on providing immediate logistical and medical support while evacuating injured crew members to ensure they received appropriate treatment.

Oman’s response highlights the role of its maritime authorities in assisting vessels operating in waters surrounding the strategically important Musandam Peninsula.

The incident has also raised renewed concerns over maritime security in waters near the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil trade passes.
