Severe tornado outbreak kills eight across central United States
At least eight people have died and dozens more have been injured after a series of powerful tornadoes and severe thunderstorms swept across the central United States, officials confirmed, as emergency crews continue rescue and recovery efforts.
The deadly storm system struck parts of Michigan and Oklahoma over the past several days, leaving widespread destruction in its wake and prompting increased warnings for further severe weather across the region.
In Michigan, at least four fatalities were reported after tornadoes touched down in the southern part of the state. Multiple twisters, including one with estimated wind speeds that local meteorologists said may have reached EF‑3 intensity, ravaged communities around Union City, Branch County, and Cass County, destroying homes, uprooting trees and leaving neighborhoods in shambles.
Among the victims was a 12‑year‑old boy killed in Edwardsburg, Michigan, when severe weather struck the area, authorities said, highlighting the human toll of the outbreak.
In Oklahoma, state and local officials confirmed four deaths linked to tornado activity. Some of the fatalities occurred when tornado‑strength winds hurled vehicles off roads and tore through residential areas.
Governors in both states have issued emergency declarations and urged residents to remain vigilant as the threat of additional severe weather persists. Meteorologists warn that the weather system could continue to produce strong thunderstorms, high winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes throughout the coming days, stretching from the Plains into parts of the Midwest and beyond.
Federal, state and local emergency responders are working around the clock to clear debris, restore power, and assist affected families. Utilities reported widespread outages and damaged infrastructure in many communities, while search and rescue operations continue in heavily hit areas.
Residents in remaining at‑risk regions have been advised to monitor local weather alerts closely and take necessary precautions as the severe weather pattern remains active. (ILKHA)
