US approves $105 million Patriot system support package for Ukraine
The US State Department has approved a potential arms package worth up to $105 million to support the sustainment of Ukraine’s Patriot air defense systems, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the package includes upgrades to Ukraine’s existing M901 launchers, bringing them to the newer M903 configuration. It also provides prescribed load lists for ground support equipment, spare parts, training programs, and additional logistics and technical support.
US officials say the deal aligns with Washington’s foreign policy goals by bolstering the defense capabilities of “a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.”
Ukraine has come to rely heavily on the US-made Patriot systems to counter Russia’s persistent missile and drone attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently confirmed that more Patriot systems have arrived in the country and are currently being deployed.
Meanwhile, Kyiv has also asked Washington for 2,500-kilometer-range Tomahawk cruise missiles. However, US President Donald Trump said he is “not really” considering the request, leaving the status of that proposal uncertain. (ILKHA)
