The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has officially updated its sanctions regulations to confirm the removal of Syria from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.

The change took effect after a legally mandated 45-day congressional review period expired without objection, completing the procedures initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump to end Syria’s designation.

According to an update published on the Treasury Department’s official website, Syria is no longer subject to regulations governing countries designated as state sponsors of terrorism. The removal also lifts restrictions associated with the designation, including measures affecting certain financial and banking transactions.

The decision follows a notification Trump sent to Congress on July 8, formally initiating the process to terminate Syria’s designation.

The Treasury Department said the regulatory change took effect immediately and was part of OFAC’s periodic updates to its sanctions framework in accordance with legal and procedural developments adopted by the U.S. administration.

Earlier Monday, Trump reposted a statement by Syrian Foreign Minister and Expatriates Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani concerning Syria’s removal from the list.

The repost came after the expiration of the 45-day period stipulated under U.S. law for congressional review of the decision.
