Von der Leyen: EU must shape emerging world order with assertive strategy
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for the European Union to take a leading role in shaping a new global order, citing a “historic” shift driven by U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies and rising geopolitical tensions.
In an interview with Germany’s Die Zeit published Tuesday, she declared: “The West as we knew it no longer exists,” pointing to strained transatlantic relations and a fragmenting world order.
Von der Leyen, a self-described Atlanticist and friend of the U.S., highlighted the growing rivalry between the U.S. and China, alongside Russia’s expansionist ambitions under President Vladimir Putin, as key drivers of global “disorder.” She urged the creation of a “new EU” capable of acting independently and assertively on the world stage. “We need another, new EU that is ready to go out into the big wide world and play a very active role in shaping this new world order,” she stated.
The EU is increasingly seen as a beacon of stability, von der Leyen noted, with nations such as Canada, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Mexico, and South American countries seeking deeper ties. “I am currently having countless talks with heads of state and government around the world who want to work together with us on the new order,” she said.
She also underscored the EU’s economic clout, noting that while U.S. trade accounts for 13% of global commerce, 87% occurs with other partners. “Everyone is asking for more trade with Europe,” she added, emphasizing the EU’s role in establishing predictable, rules-based global governance.
Von der Leyen’s remarks signal a growing consensus among EU leaders that the bloc must evolve beyond its traditional role to navigate a multipolar world. However, challenges such as Trump’s protectionist policies and internal EU divisions could complicate this ambitious vision. (ILKHA)
