Erdogan welcomes US-Iran peace agreement, hails Pakistan’s mediation efforts
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday welcomed the newly announced peace agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as a significant step toward regional stability and long-term peace.
In a statement posted on X, Erdogan expressed hope that the deal would foster a lasting environment of security in the region. “I welcome the agreement reached between the United States and Iran and see it as an important development for ensuring peace and tranquility in our region,” Erdogan said. He added that he sincerely hoped the pact would contribute to “lasting peace and security,” calling it a development the world had long awaited.
The Turkish leader urged all parties to exercise restraint until the formal signing, warning against any actions that could derail the process. “I would like to emphasize the importance of refraining from rhetoric, provocations and actions that could escalate tensions, and of remaining vigilant against possible acts of sabotage until the day the signatures are affixed,” he stated.
Erdogan thanked the leadership of both the US and Iran for reaching the agreement and extended special appreciation to Pakistan for its “exceptional mediation efforts.” He also praised the diplomatic support provided by Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
“As Türkiye, we will continue to support all efforts aimed at establishing peace, stability and prosperity in our region, and contribute to lasting solutions based on diplomacy and international law,” Erdogan concluded.
The Turkish president’s remarks followed the announcement earlier Monday by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that the United States and Iran had reached a comprehensive peace agreement.
“Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED,” Sharif posted on X. He confirmed that both sides had declared an “immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.”
According to Sharif, the official signing ceremony is scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland.US President Donald Trump announced the completion of the deal on Sunday via Truth Social, stating: “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!”
Trump also authorized the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade, writing: “I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade.” He added, “Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!” US Vice President JD Vance described the agreement as a major achievement for the United States.
The development marks a significant de-escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, with potential wide-ranging implications for regional security, energy markets, and international maritime traffic through the critical Strait of Hormuz. (ILKHA)
