Türkiye has congratulated Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his unanimous election as the new Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), expressing confidence that he will contribute to strengthening cooperation and solidarity among member states.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement following the 23rd Extraordinary Meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, held in Jeddah on Aug. 27.
Türkiye, which currently chairs the 51st Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, welcomed the unanimous election of Ould Cheikh Ahmed, who was nominated by Mauritania.
"As the Chair of the 51st Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, we congratulate H.E. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, nominated by Mauritania and unanimously elected as the Secretary-General of the OIC," the ministry said.
The ministry also wished the new secretary-general success in his upcoming responsibilities.
In its statement, the Foreign Ministry emphasized the OIC’s role in addressing challenges facing the Islamic world and defending issues of common concern.
"We believe that the OIC will continue to contribute to efforts aimed at overcoming the common challenges faced by the Islamic world in the period ahead," the ministry said.
Türkiye also highlighted the importance of the Palestinian cause, expressing its expectation that the OIC would remain an active force in defending the rights and interests of Palestinians.
The ministry said the organization should continue working to strengthen cooperation and solidarity among its member states.
Ould Cheikh Ahmed’s election comes as the OIC faces a range of major regional challenges, particularly the continuing crisis in Palestine, humanitarian emergencies across the Muslim world and the need for greater coordination among its 57 member states.
As chair of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers, Türkiye is expected to continue playing a prominent role in coordinating diplomatic efforts on issues of common concern to the organization. (ILKHA)
