A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan on Wednesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS said the epicenter was located off the coast near the city of Kuji, with the earthquake occurring at a depth of 51.7 kilometers.

Japanese authorities reported that the strong tremor was felt across parts of northeastern Japan. No tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage. Authorities said inspections were underway to assess the impact of the quake and urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks.

Officials also confirmed that no abnormalities had been detected at nuclear facilities in the affected region. Some transportation services were temporarily suspended as a precaution while safety checks were carried out.
