Eight people were killed and about half a million people were left without power after powerful thunderstorms hit Canada's two most populous provinces last weekend.

The death toll rose to at least nine after a woman died when the boat she was in capsized on the Ottawa River near Masson-Angers, Que, authorities said, saying that the fatalities were caused by falling trees in different parts of the country.

The Ontario towns of Uxbridge, north of Toronto, and Clarence-Rockland, east of Ottawa, have declared states of emergency due to the widespread damage from the storm.

“I remain focused on getting as power connected to as quickly as possible and re-establishing internet and cell phone connections,” said Uxbridge Mayor Dave Barton.

“At the same time, our emergency responders and Municipal staff are focused on improving the situation on the ground and helping residents who require services. I am grateful that peer Municipalities have provided building inspectors and other supports as we deal with this extended emergency,” he added. (ILKHA)
