Brazil sues Discord for $97 million over child safety concerns

Brazil's federal government has filed a lawsuit against gaming communications platform Discord, seeking nearly 500 million reais ($97 million) in damages over allegations that the company failed to adequately protect children and teenagers using its platform.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court by Brazil's Attorney General's Office, accuses Discord of maintaining insufficient age verification systems and inadequate user safety measures, arguing that the platform violated several provisions of Brazilian laws designed to protect minors and other vulnerable groups.
Authorities cite safety failures
According to the 25-page lawsuit, Brazilian authorities claim Discord failed to implement effective safeguards to prevent children and young users from being exposed to harmful content and online risks.
The legal action follows the reported suicide of a teenager in July that authorities said was linked to Discord. Following the incident, Brazilian officials launched a broader review of the platform's safety policies and earlier this month requested that Discord suspend livestreaming activities associated with the case.
The government argues that the platform's alleged shortcomings caused widespread psychological harm to society and is asking the court to order Discord to strengthen parental controls, improve cooperation with law enforcement agencies and deploy automated systems capable of detecting and removing harmful content.
Discord rejects allegations
Discord denied the allegations, describing the lawsuit as disproportionate and arguing that it does not accurately reflect the company's ongoing efforts to improve safety and comply with Brazilian regulations.
The company said it remains committed to protecting users and cooperating with authorities.
Global scrutiny intensifies
The Brazilian case is not the first major legal challenge facing Discord over child safety.
The platform has also faced legal actions and regulatory scrutiny in several jurisdictions, including the U.S. states of Texas, Nevada and New Jersey, over concerns related to child protection and online safety.
The lawsuit comes as Discord reports more than 90 million daily active users worldwide, adding to growing international debate over whether online platforms are doing enough to protect children and teenagers from harmful content and digital exploitation.(ILKHA)
