China rejects Taiwan’s independence claim, reasserts UN resolution

China has rejected Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s assertion that Taiwan is a sovereign and independent nation, reaffirming Beijing’s position that the island is an “inalienable part of China’s territory.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning made the remarks at a regular press briefing on Tuesday in response to Lai's claim that UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 only resolved the issue of the People's Republic of China's representation at the United Nations and did not address Taiwan.
Mao said there is only one China and described Taiwan as an inseparable part of Chinese territory. She argued that Resolution 2758 reaffirmed the one-China principle and recognized the government of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate representative of China at the United Nations.
The resolution, adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1971, decided to restore the rights of the People's Republic of China at the United Nations and recognize its representatives as the only legitimate representatives of China to the organization.
Beijing maintains that the resolution settled the issue of China's representation at the UN, including Taiwan, and rules out the existence of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan." Mao said there is only one Chinese seat at the United Nations.
Lai, however, has argued that Beijing is misinterpreting the resolution to support its claim over Taiwan. He said Resolution 2758 did not determine Taiwan's political or territorial status and urged legal professionals to challenge what he described as China's interpretation of the resolution.
The dispute comes amid continued political and military pressure between Beijing and Taipei. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly rejected the island's claims to sovereignty, while Taiwan's government maintains that its future should be determined by its people.
Mao accused the Lai administration of using what Beijing described as a distortion of Resolution 2758 to promote "Taiwan independence," saying such claims would not alter China's position on the island.
"Taiwan has never been a country and will never be a country," Mao said, reiterating Beijing's position that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China.(ILKHA)
