Erdoğan meets Azerbaijan’s Aliyev on sidelines of SCO summit in Bishkek

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Bishkek on Monday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, as the two close allies discussed bilateral relations and regional developments.
Erdoğan arrived in the Kyrgyz capital on August 31 for a two-day visit at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov to attend the SCO Summit. He is scheduled to address the expanded session of the summit on Tuesday and hold a series of bilateral meetings with participating leaders.
The meeting with Aliyev comes amid continued efforts by Türkiye and Azerbaijan to deepen their strategic partnership and coordinate their positions on regional issues. The two countries maintain close cooperation in areas including energy, transportation, trade, defense and regional connectivity.
The leaders are also expected to exchange views on developments in the South Caucasus, particularly the ongoing normalization and peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Türkiye has repeatedly expressed support for a lasting peace agreement in the region and has emphasized the importance of regional transportation and economic projects. In their previous SCO-related meeting in 2025, Erdoğan stressed that Türkiye and Azerbaijan should coordinate their regional development initiatives and continue expanding cooperation in energy and transportation.
Erdoğan and Aliyev's meeting also took place as numerous regional and global leaders gathered in Bishkek for the SCO summit. The event brings together leaders from major Eurasian powers, including China, Russia, India, Iran and Central Asian countries, providing Türkiye with an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic contacts and discuss regional and international issues.
The Turkish president's visit is part of Ankara's broader diplomatic engagement with Central Asia and the wider Eurasian region. Alongside the SCO meetings, Erdoğan attended the opening ceremony of the World Nomad Games in Bishkek together with other participating leaders. (ILKHA)
