German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said relations between Germany and Hungary should be rebuilt on the basis of trust and reliability during his visit to Budapest, describing the change in Hungary's political leadership as an opportunity for a new chapter between the two countries.

Wadephul's visit marked the first trip by a German foreign minister to Hungary in nearly seven years and came after the end of Viktor Orbán's 16-year rule.

Wadephul said the political changes in Hungary provide an opportunity to rapidly restore bilateral relations based on mutual trust and reliability.

"The political change in Hungary offers an opportunity to rebuild our relations quickly on the basis of mutual trust and reliability," Wadephul said.

He stressed that Germany and Hungary have important areas of cooperation that need to be strengthened again following years of disagreements between the two governments.

Germany has signaled that the arrival of Prime Minister Peter Magyar's government could open a new page in relations with Budapest.

The previous period under Orbán was marked by disputes with Berlin and other European Union members over issues including rule of law, migration policies and the bloc's approach to Russia and Ukraine.

The new Hungarian government has sought to present itself as a more constructive partner within the European Union and has emphasized improving relations with European allies.

Wadephul said closer cooperation between Germany and Hungary would benefit both countries, particularly in areas where bilateral ties have remained strong.

The two countries are expected to focus on strengthening political dialogue, economic cooperation and their shared role within European institutions.(ILKHA)
