Hamas rejects Trump peace plan, affirms right of Palestinian self-determination
Mahmoud Mardawi, a senior leader of Hamas, has categorically rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump’s so-called “peace plan,” denouncing it as a one-sided proposal that serves the interests of the Israeli occupation while ignoring the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.
In a statement, Mardawi revealed that the plan was never shared with Hamas or any other Palestinian faction in advance, underscoring its lack of legitimacy and inclusivity.
Mardawi condemned the Trump plan as an attempt to undermine international support for the Palestinian cause and obstruct the growing global recognition of a Palestinian state. “This plan aligns with the goals of the Zionist occupation and offers no genuine solutions for our people,” he said, criticizing its vague provisions and failure to provide security guarantees for Palestinians. “It is not a peace plan but a tool to entrench occupation and weaken our struggle for freedom.”
Emphasizing the Palestinian right to self-determination, Mardawi reiterated that Hamas will only support a proposal that ensures the protection of Palestinian rights and safety. “We will not accept any initiative that denies our people the right to determine their own future,” he declared. He also defended the use of armed resistance as a legitimate means to achieve liberation, framing it as a necessary response to decades of occupation and oppression rather than an act of aggression.
The statement comes amid escalating tensions over U.S.-led initiatives in the region, which Palestinians widely view as biased toward Israel. The Trump plan, unveiled during his presidency, has been criticized by Palestinian leaders and advocates for favoring Israeli territorial claims and economic interests while sidelining core issues such as the right of return, Jerusalem’s status, and the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state.
Mardawi’s remarks reflect the broader Palestinian resolve to resist proposals that fail to address their aspirations for justice and independence. As the struggle against occupation continues, Hamas and other Palestinian factions remain steadfast in their demand for a fair and inclusive resolution that upholds the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
