Iran and Gulf countries will hold a ministerial-level meeting in Oman on September 14 to discuss regional issues, including arrangements to ensure safer passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran and Gulf countries are set to meet in Oman on September 14 for a ministerial-level regional meeting focusing on maritime security and developments related to the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said.

According to Iran's official news agency IRNA, Baghaei said the meeting will be hosted by Oman and attended by Iran, Iraq and other Gulf coastal states.

Commercial shipping security on agenda

Baghaei said the participants will discuss regional issues as well as the outcome of Iran-Oman talks on establishing safe routes for commercial vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.

He said Iran has been working to ensure security in the strategic waterway, while adding that shipping security cannot be guaranteed as long as what he described as U.S. naval blockades and interventions in the region continue.

Oman to host regional talks

The meeting comes as regional countries seek dialogue on maritime security and stability around the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for international shipping.

Oman has frequently played a mediating role in regional issues due to its relations with both Iran and Gulf Arab countries.(ILKHA)
