Israeli drone strike kills civilians in southern Lebanon

Two Lebanese civilians were killed in a targeted Israeli drone strike on a civilian vehicle in southern Lebanon on Monday, marking yet another blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty and the November 27, 2024 ceasefire agreement.
Local sources confirmed that a man and his wife were killed in the town of Zebdeen, Nabatieh District, while another person sustained injuries. Field reports described the strike as part of a continuing pattern of Israeli aggression against civilian populations in southern Lebanon.
Al Mayadeen correspondents also reported a series of Israeli airstrikes on the heights overlooking the town of Zghrin in the Hermel border region of eastern Lebanon, further underscoring the ongoing threat to civilian life and infrastructure in the area.
Despite the ceasefire, Israel continues to carry out indiscriminate air, sea, and ground assaults targeting residential areas, vehicles, agricultural land, and vital infrastructure. Humanitarian organizations warn that these attacks have intensified in recent weeks, creating severe displacement and destruction across southern Lebanon.
The United Nations Human Rights Office confirmed that 103 civilians have been killed in Lebanon since the truce took effect, with continued strikes threatening both populated areas and sites near UN peacekeepers. UN rights chief Volker Türk urged accountability, stating that ongoing Israeli attacks “undermine the prospects of rebuilding and endanger any chance of lasting peace.”
Over 80,000 people remain displaced in Lebanon due to repeated Israeli strikes, and hundreds of schools, hospitals, and places of worship have been damaged or rendered unusable.
The latest Zebdeen strike comes amid increasing US involvement in Lebanon’s security affairs. On October 3, Reuters reported that Washington approved $230 million in conditioned aid to Lebanese armed and security forces, tied to disarming Hezbollah—a move widely perceived in Beirut as political interference and a direct violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty.
Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem condemned both the Israeli violations and US pressure, stating that Lebanon must “raise the issue of repeated aggression in every government session” and focus on protecting sovereignty and reconstruction rather than succumbing to foreign dictates.
The continued Israeli aggression in Lebanon has drawn international attention and condemnation, with analysts warning that repeated violations of the ceasefire jeopardize regional stability and exacerbate humanitarian suffering.
Lebanese authorities and civil society groups continue to call for an immediate halt to Israeli strikes and insist that accountability measures be implemented to prevent further attacks on civilians. (ILKHA)
