OIC set to hold emergency meeting on Quran desecration in Sweden and Denmark

In response to recent sacrilegious actions against the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark, the Iranian Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, announced plans for an urgent ministerial meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The virtual emergency meeting of OIC foreign ministers is scheduled to take place on July 31. This decision comes after a joint proposal by the Foreign Ministers of Iran and Iraq, along with efforts by Hossein Amirabdollahian, Iran's Minister of Foreign Affairs, who communicated with his counterparts in various Islamic countries and reached out to the Secretary-General of the OIC.
"The urgent session will discuss the issue of insulting the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark," said the spokesperson, emphasizing the gravity of the matter.
The incidents in question involved a Sweden-based Iraqi refugee named Salwan Momika, who desecrated the Muslim holy book during a demonstration outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm, with the protection of the Swedish police. Notably, this was the second time Momika had disrespected the Quran with the approval of Swedish authorities, the first being when he set a copy of the Quran on fire on June 28, sparking widespread protests across the Muslim world.
Additionally, in Copenhagen, members of an Islamophobic group called Danske Patrioter burned the Quran in front of Iraq's Embassy, displaying insulting slogans against Islam. The group also stamped the Iraqi flag and a copy of the Quran under police protection, with videos of the incident circulating on social media.
The forthcoming OIC ministerial meeting aims to address these incidents and discuss appropriate measures to address and prevent such acts of disrespect towards the Holy Quran. As the situation unfolds, attention is focused on the decisions and actions taken by the participating Islamic countries to uphold the sanctity of their sacred religious texts. (ILKHA)
