UK and France to establish military bases in Ukraine
Ukraine, France and the United Kingdom have signed a declaration of intent regarding the future deployment of an international military force in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced.
The declaration was signed by President Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and outlines plans for the possible deployment of a multinational force in Ukraine following a ceasefire.
Speaking on the agreement, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that after a ceasefire is achieved, the United Kingdom and France plan to establish military centers across Ukraine. He added that protected facilities would also be constructed to store weapons and military equipment in order to meet Ukraine’s defense needs.
International media reported that the proposed force is intended to provide security guarantees to Ukraine and deter future attacks, while discussions continue among European countries regarding the scope and mandate of the deployment.
President Zelenskyy, commenting on ongoing peace negotiations with Russia, said that the issue of territory remains the most critical challenge in the talks. He noted that Ukraine has several proposals that could be constructive and added that if negotiations stall at the technical level, the matter could be addressed directly by the leaders.
Reports in the international press also noted that the planned deployment would take place only after a ceasefire agreement is implemented and would involve coordination with Ukraine’s armed forces.
The agreement comes amid continued diplomatic efforts to reach a lasting ceasefire, as Ukraine and its Western allies seek to strengthen the country’s security framework.(ILKHA)
