U.S. President Donald Trump declares national emergency at southern border
President Donald J. Trump has declared a national emergency at the southern border of the United States.
The proclamation, which was issued on Monday, cites an "invasion" by cartels, criminal gangs, known terrorists, human traffickers, and smugglers as the primary reasons for the emergency declaration.
Trump emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the southern border is overrun by unvetted military-age males from foreign adversaries and illicit narcotics that harm Americans. He highlighted the widespread chaos and suffering caused by this invasion over the past four years, including the tragic deaths of many innocent American citizens due to drug overdoses and violent crimes committed by illegal aliens.
The proclamation calls for the immediate deployment of Armed Forces to assist the Department of Homeland Security in obtaining full operational control of the southern border. It also directs the construction of additional physical barriers and the use of unmanned aerial systems to counter threats within five miles of the border.
Trump revoked Proclamation 10142, which had terminated the previous emergency declaration and redirected funds from border wall construction. He stressed the importance of protecting the security and safety of United States citizens and upholding his duty to ensure that the laws are faithfully executed.
The Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security have been tasked with submitting reports to the President within 30 and 90 days, respectively, outlining actions taken and recommendations for additional measures to achieve complete operational control of the southern border. (ILKHA)
