X (formerly Twitter), owned by Elon Musk, has announced that users who repeatedly share AI-generated war videos without clearly labeling them as artificial content will lose the ability to earn money on the platform.
Nikita Bier, X’s Chief Product Officer, emphasized the growing ease of producing misleading content with today’s AI technologies. “From now on, AI-generated videos showing armed conflicts that are shared without disclosure will result in a 90-day ban from the Creator Revenue Sharing Program,” Bier stated.
The platform plans to identify AI-generated content through specialized detection tools and its Community Notes system, which relies on crowdsourced verification from the user base.
The Creator Revenue Sharing Program allows content creators to earn a share of ad revenue when their posts receive high engagement. While the program aims to boost interactive content on the platform, some critics argue it encourages clickbait or sensational posts.
Experts have cautioned that the new policy may be limited in scope. AI-generated images and videos are frequently used not only for war-related content but also for political disinformation and misleading product promotions. Currently, the 90-day suspension applies only to content depicting armed conflicts, leaving other potentially harmful AI-generated material outside its reach.
International news outlets have also reported the policy. Business Standard noted that the measure targets users who fail to disclose AI-generated war videos, while India Today and Tribune highlighted its relevance amid ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Officials from the United States have praised X’s efforts, saying such financial penalties could help reduce the spread of misleading information.
