Gaza death toll rise to 71,384 despite ongoing ceasefire
The death toll in the Gaza Strip has continued to climb despite a ceasefire that went into effect on October 11, with the number of Palestinians killed since the start of the Israeli aggression in October 2023 reaching at least 71,384, the majority of them women and children, according to medical sources in Gaza.
Health authorities said that at least 171,251 people have also been injured, while the overall toll remains incomplete as thousands of victims are still believed to be trapped beneath rubble or in areas inaccessible to ambulance and rescue crews due to widespread destruction and ongoing restrictions.
Medical sources reported that over the past 48 hours, three bodies were brought to hospitals across the Gaza Strip, including one recovered from under the rubble, along with 18 wounded individuals.
Since the ceasefire came into force on October 11, at least 418 Palestinians have been killed and 1,171 others injured, highlighting the continued human cost even during the supposed pause in hostilities. In addition, 684 bodies have been recovered from destroyed buildings and mass casualty sites during this period.
Health officials also noted that 110 previously unrecorded fatalities were added to the cumulative death toll after their data was finalized and formally approved by the committee responsible for verifying the identities of those killed. These cases cover the period between December 26, 2025, and January 2, 2026.
The Gaza health sector has repeatedly warned that the true number of casualties is likely far higher, as ongoing devastation, fuel shortages, and damage to infrastructure continue to hinder rescue operations and the full documentation of the dead and injured. (ILKHA)
