Two men injured in powerful explosion at Malta’s Ta’ Lourdes fireworks factory
A massive explosion ripped through the Ta’ Lourdes fireworks factory in the Magħtab area early Monday morning, injuring two bystanders, damaging nearby farms and properties, and sending shockwaves across large parts of the island.
The blast occurred at around 6:30–6:35 a.m. on Triq tal-Qagħdi, triggering a series of smaller secondary explosions. A thick plume of smoke was visible from many areas, including Naxxar and Salina, while residents kilometres away reported shattered windows, rattled buildings, and structural damage.
The two injured men, aged 67 and 47, both residents of St. Paul’s Bay, were working in fields near the factory when the explosion happened. They were taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance and treated for minor injuries and shock before being discharged.
No factory workers were on site at the time of the blast, which authorities say prevented potentially worse casualties. Civil Protection Department teams, police, and the Armed Forces of Malta responded quickly, securing the area amid ongoing small fires and explosions.
Updated details from local reports indicate significant impact on surrounding agricultural land. Birds, rabbits, and dairy cows were among the animals killed, while farmers reported structural damage to farms, greenhouses, and livestock areas. The Malta Youth in Agriculture Foundation (MaYA) has called for support for affected farming families.
Prime Minister Robert Abela expressed his thoughts with those affected and offered government support. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause. The factory has a prior history, including an explosion in 2018.
Roads in the vicinity were closed as emergency services continued operations throughout the morning. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the Magħtab/Mosta area while assessments continue. (ILKHA)
