Ukraine deploys ground robots in over 100 attacks, signaling new phase in war
A new phase in the Russia-Ukraine war is emerging as Ukrainian forces increasingly deploy unmanned ground robots in combat operations, conducting more than 100 attacks against Russian targets.
According to Ukrainian military sources, the army has carried out over 100 assaults along the фронт line using unmanned ground vehicles, marking a significant shift in battlefield tactics.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Russian positions were captured through coordinated use of ground robots and unmanned aerial vehicles, describing the operation as “a first in history.”
A statement from a Ukrainian special unit indicated that such operations have evolved beyond isolated missions into a systematic method of warfare.
Described as “robotic assaults,” these operations involve both explosive-laden and armed unmanned ground vehicles targeting enemy personnel, shelters, and command centers.
Military officials noted that the systems are actively used to neutralize enemy elements and destroy fortified positions, while reducing risks to Ukrainian soldiers.
Commanders emphasized that the robots are particularly effective in areas where infantry units face difficulties advancing.
The systems provide continuous operational capability and allow missions to be conducted in high-risk zones with reduced human exposure.
Previously used for tasks such as evacuating wounded soldiers, these unmanned ground platforms are now being deployed directly in offensive roles.
According to available information, one of the first notable operations using this method occurred in the summer of 2025.
In that instance, four explosive-laden ground robots were sent toward a Russian position. The first detonated at the entrance, breaching access, while the others advanced toward the shelter and forced soldiers inside to surrender.
Experts say the increasing use of unmanned ground systems signals a broader shift in modern warfare, where autonomous and remotely operated technologies may play a more decisive role than human forces.
